Pendulum slip testing for Southampton floors.
Independent, UKAS-accredited floor slip resistance testing to BS 7976-2 — proving your floors are safe and your duty of care is covered.
PTV 36 or above is the benchmark for a low-risk floor in wet conditions. We measure it, evidence it, and report it.
What slip testing actually measures
Pendulum slip testing is the HSE’s preferred method for measuring how slippery a floor is. A calibrated pendulum swings a rubber slider across your surface — simulating a heel strike — to produce a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) in both wet and dry conditions.
It’s carried out to BS 7976-2 / BS EN 16165 and UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) guidelines. The result is an objective, court-defensible number — not a guess — that proves whether your floor meets accepted safety thresholds.
Every test by a UKAS-accredited technician
We provide the full range of slip resistance test methods recognised by the HSE, building control bodies, insurers and the courts. Every test is conducted by a UKAS-accredited technician — so your results aren’t just a reading, they’re evidence that stands up to scrutiny.
Floors we test across Hampshire
If people walk on it and it can get wet, worn or contaminated, it should be tested. We assess single surfaces through to whole-site surveys.

Slip testing across Southampton & beyond
We test throughout the city and the surrounding Hampshire towns.
From the docks and Ocean Village to the Spitfire’s old home in Woolston, Southampton has always been a city of engineering and the sea — and a great port puts more wet, salt and footfall through its floors than almost anywhere. That’s exactly where measured, evidenced slip resistance earns its keep.
Frequently asked questions
What is pendulum slip testing?
It’s an on-site floor safety test that measures slip resistance. A calibrated pendulum swings a rubber slider across the floor to produce a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). It’s the HSE-preferred method and is carried out to BS 7976-2 / BS EN 16165 and UKSRG guidelines.
What PTV score is considered safe?
A wet PTV of 36 or above is treated as low slip risk, 25–35 is moderate, and 24 or below is high risk. We test in both wet and dry conditions and report your floor against these HSE and UKSRG thresholds.
Do you cover all of Southampton and Hampshire?
Yes. We test throughout Southampton — the city centre, Ocean Village, Portswood, Shirley, Bitterne and Woolston — plus Eastleigh, Totton, Hedge End, Romsey, Hythe and Winchester across Hampshire.
How quickly do I get my report?
Reports are typically issued within 48 hours of the site visit, and we reply to every enquiry within 24 hours.
Is the test disruptive, and how long does it take?
No — each test covers roughly one square metre and takes only a few minutes once set up. The number of tests depends on how many different surfaces you want assessed.
Are your reports accepted for HSE, insurance and court?
Yes. Surface Performance is a UKAS-accredited laboratory testing to BS 7976. Independent, accredited PTV results are recognised by the HSE and UKSRG and accepted as credible evidence in insurance and civil claims.
